Elke week kom ik wel iemand tegen die denkt dat <em>wat<\/em> je zegt nauwelijks invloed heeft op hoe je overkomt. Tot grote frustratie van de wetenschapper zelf, overigens. Hij voert actief campagne tegen beunhazen in de communicatiesector die zijn onderzoek misbruiken. Op <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kaaj.com\/psych\/smorder.html\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zijn website<\/a> benadrukt Mehrabian dat deze statistieken alleen van toepassing zijn wanneer je over je eigen emoties spreekt. Als je jouw eigen boosheid wil communiceren, dan werkt een boze stem en een boze lichaamstaal beter dan het woordje \u2018boos\u2019. In alle andere gevallen gelden deze statistieken niet; ze zijn dan ook zeker niet van toepassing op communicatie in het algemeen.<\/p>\n<p>Het verbaast me hoeveel mensen zulke cijfers klakkeloos overnemen. Als woorden inderdaad maar 7 procent van onze communicatie zouden vormen, zou je jezelf toch serieus moeten afvragen waarom er nog mensen zijn die een vreemde taal leren. Met die 93 procent zou je jezelf toch ook wel moeten kunnen redden in de binnenlanden van Buiten-Mongoli\u00eb. Dit verschilt teveel per boodschap, spreker, publiek, gelegenheid en natuurlijk het medium.<\/p>\n<p>En toch is het erg belangrijk om te weten dat die 93% niet klopt. De mythe zorgt voor onnodige spanning bij mensen die toch al last hebben van spreekangst. Hopelijk geeft deze tip hen meer zelfvertrouwen! Ook suggereert de mythe dat het nauwelijks zin heeft om na te denken over de inhoud, terwijl die wel degelijk een belangrijk onderdeel vormt van jouw overtuigingskracht.
