\"\"Weet jij waarom telefoonnummers uit 7 \u00e0 8 getallen bestaan (exclusief de land en netnummers)? Bell Labs, dat toen functioneerde als een onderzoeksinstituut van het Amerikaanse nationale telefoonbedrijf, moest op zoek naar een geschikt aantal cijfers voor de telefoonnummers. Het verhaal gaat dat Bell Labs de vermaarde Harvard professor George Miller vroeg onderzoek te doen naar het aantal stukjes informatie die -de meeste-\u00a0 mensen kunnen onthouden in een serie.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Miller publiceerde een artikel met de titel The<\/em> Magical Number Seven, plus or Minus Two<\/em>[1]<\/sup>, dat inmiddels is uitgegroeid tot een klassieker in de psychologie. Miller ontdekte dat de meeste mensen zeven stukken informatie kunnen opslaan, met een standaardafwijking van twee. Dit was toen\u00a0 de reden voor Bell Labs om hun telefoonnummers uit zeven cijfers te laten bestaan.<\/p>\n

Chuncking<\/h3>\n

Hedendaagse wetenschappers hebben het werk van Miller inmiddels genuanceerd, waarbij de consensus neerkomt op het onhouden van drie brokjes van informatie[2]<\/sup>. Jazeker, brokjes. Ook hier komt het telefoonnummer weer om de hoek kijken. Het gaat namelijk om het volgende: als jij een telefoonnummer van 7 \u00e0 8 getallen moet onthouden, onthoud jij dan elk getal individueel? De kans is groot dat jij het nummer ophakt in hapklare brokjes die je makkelijker kunt onthouden. Deze techniek om dingen beter te onthouden wordt ‘chunking’ genoemd: je groepeert individuele stukken informatie in grotere brokken, met als resultaat dat je in totaal meer individuele stukjes informatie kunt onthouden. Was het je al opgevallen dat ons telefoonnummer vaak genoteerd staat als (010) 414 8869 en niet als 0104148869?😉<\/p>\n

De regel van drie<\/h3>\n

Deze kennis kun je ook bij toepassen bij het overtuigen. De regel van drie is niet voor niets \u00e9\u00e9n van de meest krachtige technieken gebruikt door auteurs, speechwriters en reclamebureau’s. Eerder schreven we al over de drieslag<\/a>\u00a0en over het feit dat je het beste drie argumenten<\/a>\u00a0kunt gebruiken. Maar deze regel helpt jou bijvoorbeeld ook bij het onthouden van je verhaal of presentatie. Maar misschien nog wel belangrijker: door jouw verhaal te beperken rondom drie hoofdpunten zal het beter blijven hangen bij je publiek.<\/p>\n
